Humane Livestock Handling Series

MOFGA is offering a Humane Livestock Handling series to teach practical techniques and health exam procedures for anyone owning, working with, or new to livestock and poultry. This comprehensive program includes both weekly virtual sessions and a hands-on element at the conclusion of the course.

Program benefits include:

  • Developing an understanding of humane livestock handling
  • Learning basic health exam procedures to better communicate with veterinarians
  • Six, weekly, virtual sessions formulating strategies for business decisions in regards to livestock welfare 
  • Building an Annual Animal Care Agreement, Flock or Herd Health Plan, and Emergencies Services Sheet and Action Plan all of which are required for Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (F.A.R.M.) certification, and much of which is required for organic certification

Participants are able to choose the species they wish to focus on, and tailor their plans and information to their farms/situations. As well as MOFGA created content, additional resources are included to round out the curriculum. 

The series will begin Monday, April 26, 2021. Virtual classes run every week on Monday’s. All online meetings will have a nearly unlimited capacity. There will be one in-person class on May 26, 2021 at Misty Brook Farm starting at 10 a.m. that will be limited to 20 participants. The 20 participants will be chosen based on order of registration for this series. The final virtual wrap-up meeting will be on May 31, 2021. 

This series is being offered on a sliding scale from $0-$50. Registration is Free for MOFGA Apprentices, Journeypersons, Veterans and Black, Indigenous and People of Color.

You must complete the REGISTRATION by Sunday, April 25, 2021 to participate in the series.
